Ghana Police Arrest Key Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s Murder Case

he Ghana Police Service has made a major breakthrough in the murder investigation of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, arresting a key suspect linked to the case.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, was apprehended at Amasaman-Adease last week after sneaking back into Ghana. Authorities believe he played a role in Suale’s assassination by allegedly leaking his photographs to a prominent politician before his murder.

FBI Evidence Leads to Arrest

Ahmed Suale was gunned down near his home in Madina on January 16, 2019, shortly after working on an investigative story with the BBC. Police had long suspected Amakye, a former Tiger Eye PI investigator, who was dismissed from the organization before the journalist’s killing.

The breakthrough comes after the FBI in the United States analyzed Suale’s phone records, uncovering crucial evidence of phone conversations between him and Amakye just days before the murder. Suale’s phones were sent to the U.S. as part of the ongoing investigation.

Sources close to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) revealed that Amakye fled Ghana when police began closing in, first relocating to the UK before secretly returning last week.

Police Headquarters in Tension Over Investigation

The arrest has reportedly triggered internal tensions at the Police Headquarters, with a top-ranking officer allegedly attempting to interfere in the investigation. The officer is said to be pushing for Amakye to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being remanded for trial.

This latest development has intensified calls for justice in Suale’s assassination, which was linked to his team’s explosive corruption exposé on African football, particularly in Ghana.

The police are yet to officially comment on the next legal steps, but pressure is mounting for a transparent and thorough prosecution of all involved in the journalist’s murder.
