The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong, who is believed to have lost his life during an armed robbery attack on the Bibiani–Goaso road.
The incident reportedly occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture, sending shockwaves through the country’s football community.
In a statement released on April 13, the GFA said it was “profoundly shocked and deeply saddened” by the news, extending its condolences to all affected.
“The Ghana Football Association has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the statement read.
According to reports, the 20-year-old player died during the attack, which has since left teammates, officials, and supporters in mourning.
“The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time,” the association added.
The football governing body further described Frimpong as a promising young talent whose passion and commitment reflected the spirit of the domestic league. It noted that his death represents a significant loss not only to his club but to Ghana football as a whole.
The GFA also confirmed that it is working closely with Berekum Chelsea and relevant security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the statement emphasized.
In response to the tragedy, the GFA said it will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for teams traveling for league matches to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We call on the entire football community to unite in support of Berekum Chelsea and the bereaved family in this moment of grief,” the statement concluded.
The incident has triggered widespread mourning across the Ghanaian football fraternity, with calls for improved safety measures for clubs on away fixtures.
