Former Auditor General Domelevo Calls Out Corruption Among Public Officials

Former Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has once again spoken out against corruption within the public sector, emphasizing that it is not merely a matter of suspicion but a well-documented issue of embezzlement.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, February 18, Domelevo was candid about the rampant misappropriation of public funds by those in office.

“It’s not about suspecting them. They have consistently demonstrated that they have been siphoning public funds. The evidence is overwhelming,” he asserted.

Referring to the Auditor General’s reports, he highlighted a recurring trend where government officials misuse funds for personal gain.

“A look at the Auditor General’s report will show you that public officials entrusted with financial resources have repeatedly mismanaged or diverted them for their benefit,” he added.

Alarming Wealth Accumulation Among Public Officials

Domelevo also expressed concern over the sudden affluence of some government officials, noting that their wealth far exceeds what their official salaries could reasonably afford.

“Many of these officials serve for just four or, at most, eight years, yet they amass enormous wealth. Their riches are staggering,” he observed.

Sharing a personal anecdote, he questioned the financial standing of some Members of Parliament compared to his own earnings as Auditor General:

“I used to tell some MPs that my salary as Auditor General was higher than theirs, yet they appeared to be 100 times wealthier than me. How did they accumulate such wealth?” he asked pointedly.

Call for Greater Accountability

He reiterated that the reality is not based on mere speculation but on solid proof of financial misconduct.

“The undeniable truth is that public funds are being stolen. This is why we advocate for transparency regarding officials’ financial status before and after holding office,” he explained.

While he acknowledged that not all public officials are guilty of corruption, he stressed that many have clearly abused their positions for personal gain.

Challenges in Enforcing Asset Declaration Laws

Reflecting on his time in office, Domelevo admitted facing difficulties in enforcing laws related to asset declaration.

“Yes, I encountered several challenges in ensuring compliance with asset declaration requirements,” he recalled.

His remarks reignite discussions on the need for stricter financial accountability and transparency measures within Ghana’s public sector.
