Foreign Minister Ablakwa Invites US Ambassador Over Trump’s 10% Tariff on Ghanaian Imports

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that he has extended an official invitation to the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, to meet at his office on Monday, April 7, for discussions regarding a newly announced 10% tariff imposed on Ghanaian imports by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The meeting seeks to provide clarity on the implications of the tariff and the rationale behind its implementation, which has sparked growing concerns among Ghanaian businesses and policymakers.

President Trump recently unveiled a series of sweeping tariff measures aimed at several global trading partners. These include a 34% levy on Chinese imports, a 20% tax on European Union goods, and a 10% baseline import tax on goods from Ghana, as part of what observers describe as a significant escalation in global trade tensions.

In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Minister Ablakwa emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement in light of the potential economic impact of the U.S. decision.

“I can confirm that I have invited the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, to my office on Monday morning to provide clarifications and reasons for President Trump’s imposition of a 10% tariff on Ghana,” the Minister stated.

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has also voiced strong opposition to the move. In a press release issued on Friday, April 4, the Association condemned the tariff as a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) protocols and warned that it could pose serious consequences for Ghana’s economy, particularly in terms of trade volumes and competitiveness.

As Ghana awaits the outcome of Monday’s meeting, stakeholders across the business and policy sectors continue to monitor developments closely, amid concerns over the broader implications for bilateral trade relations between Ghana and the United States.
