Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Akwatia MP-Elect Ernest Yaw Kumi Over Contempt

A High Court in Koforidua has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the presumed winner of the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the Eastern Region, after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

The warrant was issued following Kumi’s repeated failure to appear before the court despite being summoned. His conviction stems from his defiance of an interim injunction placed on him on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election victory.

Despite the court order, Kumi proceeded to attend Parliament and take the oath of office on January 7.

Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe emphasized that Kumi had failed to appear in person throughout the contempt proceedings.

The court also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus in Parliament, which claimed Kumi’s absence was due to his parliamentary obligations. Justice Amedahe refused to accept the letter, stating that doing so would contradict his own ruling.

With the warrant now in effect, law enforcement is expected to take action to enforce the court’s decision.
