Black Stars Team Manager Defends Performance Despite AFCON 2025 Qualification Failure

Ghana’s inability to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has drawn widespread criticism, but Black Stars Team Manager, Ameenu Shardow, insists the team’s overall performances were better than the results suggest.

Speaking on Happy FM following Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Niger, which confirmed their failure to qualify, Shardow highlighted the team’s effort in matches such as their opening 1-0 defeat to Angola. He argued that the results did not accurately reflect the team’s on-field performance.

“It’s only the results which are yet to come, but if you look at the performances of the team in most of the games, we performed better than the results that we got,” Shardow said.

Referring to the Angola match, he continued: “If we are going to be honest and factual, did anything in our first game suggest we deserved to lose? When you set aside emotions and analyze the details, you’ll see that we performed well. Based on performance alone, Ghana should have topped the group unless we choose to ignore the facts.”

Shardow’s defense comes amid mounting criticism of head coach Otto Addo, who has faced backlash for the team’s failure to qualify. Addo has expressed deep regret over the outcome, acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans and his own family.

Despite the setback, Shardow remains optimistic, emphasizing that the team’s performances indicate potential for future success.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to review the team’s performances during the qualifiers and chart a path forward.
