Bagbin Directs Majority Leader to Schedule Motion on Post-Election Public Sector Dismissals

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has instructed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion demanding a full parliamentary investigation into the termination of public sector appointments made after the 2024 general elections.

The directive was issued on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, following a firm stance by the Minority Parliamentary Caucus, which has vowed to use all available parliamentary mechanisms to challenge the government’s decision.

The motion, originally filed last year by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had remained dormant without being listed for consideration. It seeks a comprehensive probe into a directive issued by the Chief of Staff on February 11, 2025, which ordered the revocation of appointments for public sector workers recruited after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The Minority has described the directive as unfair and unlawful, arguing that affected workers were legitimately employed and that Parliament has a duty to scrutinize both the circumstances and the legal basis for their dismissal.

By directing that the motion be scheduled, the Speaker has effectively opened the door for a formal parliamentary process that could lead to debate and deeper scrutiny of the executive action.

However, the path forward remains uncertain. The Majority Caucus has resisted attempts to table the motion, raising a procedural objection. According to the Majority, the matter is currently before the courts, and debating it in Parliament would breach the sub judice rule, a convention that prevents parliamentary discussion of issues under active judicial consideration to avoid prejudicing ongoing cases.

As Parliament resumes its work, attention will be on whether the motion will be admitted for debate or deferred until the courts conclude their deliberations, a decision that could shape the next phase of the political and legal contest over the post-election terminations.
