Baba Jamal Wins Ayawaso East By-Election

Baba Jamal has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, securing the seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The by-election was conducted following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

Baba Jamal defeated Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed in a contest that was generally peaceful across polling stations. Although voter turnout was reported to be low in several centres, the exercise proceeded smoothly under the supervision of electoral officials and security personnel.

Ahead of the polls, research firm Global InfoAnalytics had projected a strong lead for the NDC candidate after conducting a constituency-wide survey between February 28 and March 1. The final outcome broadly reflected those projections.

The victory marks Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia and also as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. He is expected to be sworn in by Parliament in the coming days to officially assume his role as Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East.
