Baba Jamal Cleared by NDC Committee, Set to Contest Ayawaso East By-Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has upheld Mohammed Baba Jamal as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, dismissing allegations of vote buying that surfaced during the party’s recent primary.

The decision follows the work of a three-member investigative committee established by the party after claims emerged that some aspirants engaged in inducement during the parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7. Reports circulating after the election alleged that television sets and cash were distributed to delegates, sparking public debate and raising concerns about the monetisation of internal party contests.

In response, the NDC tasked the committee with reviewing petitions from delegates and party members, examining available evidence, and engaging key stakeholders. After its investigation, the committee reportedly found no grounds to disqualify Baba Jamal, who won the primary.

While the committee acknowledged broader concerns about vote buying in internal elections, it concluded that there was insufficient evidence to warrant any action against the candidate.

Baba Jamal has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that his campaign complied fully with party rules and guidelines.

With the matter settled, he is expected to file his nomination with the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, February 11, ahead of the by-election.

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, prompting the need for a by-election. The NDC is expected to officially communicate the committee’s findings as it intensifies preparations and campaigning for the contest.
