Ayawaso East Constituents Head to Polls for By-Election

Voters in the Ayawaso East constituency are returning to the polls today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the passing of the late MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

More than 40,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the exercise. After internal party primaries, the main contenders are:

  • Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)
  • Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former High Commissioner to Nigeria

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that all logistical and security preparations are complete to ensure a smooth and credible process. Speaking on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, said the commission is ready for a “well-organized” exercise.

“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference,” Tetteh stated. He added that any proven fraudulent activity would be investigated and addressed.

The EC has also issued warnings against electoral misconduct, particularly vote-buying, noting that strict sanctions would be applied in any confirmed cases. Under the first-past-the-post system, the candidate with the highest number of valid votes will be declared the winner, regardless of the margin.

To maintain peace and protect the integrity of the vote, the Ghana Police have deployed officers across the constituency. Their presence aims to ensure voters can cast their ballots in a secure and orderly environment throughout the day.
