Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged all flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to place unity above individual ambition after the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31.
Speaking at the signing of a peace pact by the five NPP aspirants on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the former President stressed that unity within the party is not a matter of choice but a necessity for electoral success.
According to him, the strength of the NPP lies in its enduring ideology, which continues to resonate with the majority of Ghanaians. He emphasised that no single individual is bigger than the party, noting that cohesion after the primaries will be critical to securing victory in future elections.
“The ideology of the New Patriotic Party remains deeply attractive to Ghanaians. The NPP is bigger than any individual, and unity is not an option; it is a strategic necessity to victory,” Akufo-Addo stated.
Also addressing the gathering, former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, called for fairness and integrity throughout the flagbearer selection process. He urged aspirants and party stakeholders to uphold the core values and traditions of the NPP.
Professor Oquaye stressed that the peace pact was necessary to safeguard party unity, especially in light of past experiences where unfair practices, partiality and extreme partisanship undermined internal cohesion.
“Please do something honourable for the New Patriotic Party and our tradition,” he appealed, adding that previous internal divisions had weakened the party and must not be repeated.
He concluded by emphasising that fairness, respect and unity must guide the entire electoral process if the NPP is to emerge stronger and more united after the primaries.
