The Minerals Commission has revised its records, revealing that 318 mining-related licenses became effective during the last week of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure. This figure significantly surpasses the initial report of 102 licenses, more than tripling the previous estimate.
The updated data further confirms that a total of 328 mining-related licenses have been approved in 2025 so far. Notably, 318 of these were issued between January 1 and January 6, just before President John Dramani Mahama officially assumed office.
These new figures also highlight that the current administration has approved only 10 mining-related licenses to date, a notable increase from the single license originally reported by JoyNews.
Ghana’s Active Mining Licenses Now Total 2,246
Following the revision, Ghana’s total number of active mining-related licenses has climbed to 2,246, reflecting an increase of 119 from the previously recorded 2,127.
Additionally, the newly updated data has prompted a reassessment of the total number of mining-related licenses granted during Nana Akufo-Addo’s two terms in office (January 6, 2017 – January 6, 2025).
Earlier reports from JoyNews suggested that 2,037 licenses had been issued under his administration, accounting for 95.7% of all active mining-related permits at that time.
