President Mahama to Amend Holidays Act, Introduce Additional Holiday for Eid al-Fitr

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to amend Ghana’s Holidays Act to introduce an additional holiday in celebration of Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant Islamic festivals.

Speaking at a recent event, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and recognizing the contributions of Ghana’s Muslim community. The new holiday will give Muslims across the country more time to celebrate and reflect during the conclusion of Ramadan.

“We are going to amend the Holidays Act to include an extra holiday on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr,” the President declared, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to fostering religious harmony and supporting the cultural values of all Ghanaians.

This initiative forms part of broader measures announced by the President to address the needs of the Muslim community, including reducing Hajj costs, providing scholarships for underprivileged Muslim students, and protecting religious rights, such as the freedom to wear hijabs in public spaces.

The proposed amendment will be submitted to Parliament once its new session begins, paving the way for the additional holiday to become a permanent fixture in Ghana’s national calendar.

This move has been warmly received by the Muslim community, which sees it as a step towards acknowledging their religious and cultural practices as an integral part of Ghanaian society.
