National Economic Dialogue to Shape March 11 Budget – Prof. Gatsi

A member of the seven-member National Economic Dialogue Committee, Prof. John Gatsi, has confirmed that recommendations from the National Economic Dialogue will influence the upcoming national budget, set to be presented on March 11.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof. Gatsi highlighted that while President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) provided a broad overview of the economic landscape, the Finance Minister’s budget presentation would delve deeper into key areas such as debt management and fiscal policies.

“The President’s SONA gave a qualitative perspective in many areas, but the Finance Minister will provide a detailed analysis of our economic situation, particularly regarding debt management,” he explained.

He emphasized that debt management extends beyond just figures, involving policy mechanisms and institutional frameworks that shape how the country handles its debt.

“When discussing fiscal matters, it’s not just about the debt-to-GDP ratio; there are broader fiscal indicators that must be considered to fully capture the economic reality. That’s what the Finance Minister’s presentation will focus on,” he added.

Prof. Gatsi also noted that while certain recommendations from the National Economic Dialogue would be incorporated into the budget, others would serve as guiding principles for long-term economic reforms.

“Some recommendations will be reflected in the budget, but others relate to structural and long-term economic strategies. That’s why the President’s address not only outlined the challenges but also the opportunities they present,” he concluded.
